It is well known that T S Eliot DID NOT like women and you only have to read his early work to prove this. I have just read several articles written this year 2018 by prominent journalists showing how Eliot degraded women in his work. Anyone who has read T S Eliot knows that. What annoys me too is that Eliot's 2nd wife BANNED all and everyone from having any access to the Eliot / Haig Wood letters and had the cheek to claim
copyright on all of Vivienne Haig Woods papers. T S Eliot admitted he only married Viveinne to gain a passport to English Society, now that was cheap, He used her, abused her & then dumped her & blocked her from access to her inheritence,When he went to the USA he locked her out of the marital home & Vivienne was found walking the streets in a terrible state and was locked away for good in Northumberland Asylum until she took her own life 9 years later and who can blame her. I have read several of her letters to her so called friends crying out asking them to help “Give me back my life, my books, my home, my things as I feel I will die in here” And no one did anything. A Total disgrace and a Horrible TS Eliot. A foul
vulgar excuse of a man. He had a responsibility to his wife, he never divorced Vivienne but he took her money. Utter degenerate. Vivienne is always portrayed as a crazy stupid woman. I am sure that Eliot was as equally responsible for the marriage's failure and not because he "had an inability to put up with her poor mental and physical health" but because I suspect he was emotionally distant and a bit as Woolf said "priggish" and arrogant and standoffish. Don't get me wrong, I love Eliot's work.

But it seriously disturbs me that every conversation about his first marriage belittles and stereotypes Vivienne as the overbearing, crazy wife. Marriage is 2-sided. And people forget that Eliot himself had poor mental health - why not mention that? He spent 1 year in a sanatorium in 1921. It really disgusts me that even that is blamed on Vivienne. Sheesh. Give the woman a break people.

If you look through history, one of my most upsetting findings is the way that some of my literary male heros treated their wives. They may have been geniuses, but they were shitty to their women. Fitzgerald confiscated his wife's book claiming that she was a third-writer and used material from their lives that was "HIS."

Gulp. I just can't quite make peace with all of the ways that Eliot and Fitzgerald and all the others are praised, while the women they are married to - writers too - are shit on.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8110593839933052062.post-24126032297933477922012-01-04T08:48:58.545-08:002012-01-04T08:48:58.545-08:00nice postnice postAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
